5 Days to Your Best Christmas Ever, Day 2 – Your Favorite Ways to Celebrate

Today is Day 2 of our 5-day journey to your best Christmas ever! It’s time to focus on your favorite ways to celebrate Christmas. This is an opportunity to look at the things you usually do and pick out the ones you look forward to the most, not a time to think about things you wish you did (there will be a chance to do that soon!)

Every year, our church hosts a Drive-Thru Nativity. Volunteers sign up to act out different scenes from the nativity story along a driving route around our church campus. It’s a beautiful portrayal and a wonderful start to the Christmas season for us. We look forward to it every year! My whole family definitely keeps this activity on our must-do Christmas celebration list.

We also love getting out all our Christmas decorations. We have a really cute Christmas tree advent puzzle, a nativity scene, and other little decorations that help us get into the holiday spirit. When we unpack them, it really sets the season in motion for us.

I know of other common traditions like driving through special neighborhoods to look at Christmas lights, picking out or cutting down Christmas trees, watching favorite Christmas movies, or going shopping, just to name a few.

So here’s today’s discussion:

What things do you already do to celebrate Christmas that mean the most to you, your kids, and your family? Make sure you give your kids a chance to weigh in on this one. You may find there are some activities or moments that hold special meaning to them that you would not have expected!

Let me know how your conversation goes! And please do share your favorite activities in the comments below! Hearing how others celebrate can give us ideas too!

  • My favorite Christmas celebration is kicking off our holiday season on Thanksgiving night watching Elf . My boys love decorating a gingerbread house (or train or village– depending on what kit we purchase).

    • I love watching Christmas movies to start the season. And Elf is a great one!!! This year, my son watched his first holiday movie. It happened to be one of my favorites, an old Bing Crosby/Fred Astaire film called “Holiday Inn.” He loved it!

  • I asked my boys and they said they love the way we spend Christmas Eve. It’s one of their birthdays so we share that day with him. We celebrate his birthday, have a special dinner, and then we sit down together and read the Christmas story from the scriptures and sing carols. We also open new pajamas. One of my favorite ways to celebrate is reading a Christmas storybook each night leading up to Christmas Eve. And last year we started a twelve days of Christmas tradition where we open a homemade ornament each of those nights. Each ornament has a different name for Christ and a corresponding scripture verse.
