5 Days to Your Best Christmas Ever, Day 4 – Making New Memories

Now that you’ve taken a look at what you love to do and what you can do without during the holiday season, it’s time to take a moment to decide if there’s something new you would like to add. This is the perfect opportunity to brainstorm new family traditions with your spouse and your children so that you can start making new memories together.

5 Days to Your Best Christmas Ever, Day 4 - Making New Memories

Here in San Antonio, tamales are a big part of Christmas. Last year, there were a number of free tamale workshops and events based around learning to make and incorporate them into your holiday celebrations. I wanted so badly to participate but Dash was only a couple months old at the time. There was no way I could make the time to attend. We only barely got our Christmas tree up!

But this year is a different story. I’m hoping they will offer those events again so that we can take advantage of them. I think adding some tamales to our Christmas-time feasts would be perfect!

Is there something you have always wanted to incorporate but never have? This could be a new tradition, event, activity, or even something as simple as a new decoration or family get-together.

Make a list of ideas as a family and see if it makes sense to try adding one or two of these ideas into your celebration this year.

After all, you might have freed up some new time in your schedule by eliminating all of those joy-stealing activities from yesterday’s discussion. There’s nothing better than replacing those downers with something that you can get excited about!

But please, be careful! Try not to overschedule!

Overscheduling is a big danger at this time of year. There is often so much that we want to do that we cram it all in one huge unreasonable agenda and, before we know it, we have completely scheduled the Christmas out of Christmas.

Try to limit yourself to only adding one or two new items. If the list of wants ends up being longer than 2 items, take a family vote and add the ones that didn’t make the cut to next year’s celebration.

  • My niece makes tamales with her family every Christmas Eve. Her mom is from Mexico so that’s a tradition she grew up with. I want to learn how to make divinity this year.

    • Did you get a chance to make your divinity? I never did get to make tamales this year but next year…I’m gonna do my best to make it happen!!!!
